The Freelance Survival Guide - by Fiona Friend

I’ve freelanced now for over seventeen years and so when I read about the freelance blues it rang a distinct bell!

It got me thinking about what I do to beat them. There are lots of not-so-effective ways that only work temporarily like:

Surfing the internet
Eating chocolate
Eating biscuits
Going out…on any excuse. These can all work but only up to a point and can be counter-productive!

Then there are more constructive ways such as:

Ring another freelance
Walk the dog or do whatever exercise suits you to raise your energy levels
Eat every three or four hours to avoid the blood-sugar imbalances
Arrange to see friends on a regular basis
Do a few new business things – make a few phone calls to clients, write ideas for articles, send off a few emails to contacts to remind them about your work. Then reward yourself with a break.
Work with another freelance or office-shar e occasionally
Set realistic goals and arrange regular days off or half-days to give yourself a deadline.

Being freelance can be extremely hard work – particularly if you work at home. But there are great benefits. If all else fails think about your last P45 job and why you left to set up in business on your own. Or go and see a client and envisage working there every day, 9-5. If it doesn’t have you whistling Dolly Parton and rushing back to your desk with renewed enthusiasm then maybe it’s time to look at the ads in Guardian Media. Good Luck!
